Marine & vessel laser scanning and as-built surveys

We capture the exact as-built reality of vessels, engine rooms, machinery spaces and port structures — as survey-grade point clouds and 3D/BIM models. The accurate basis for ballast water and scrubber retrofits, dry-dock work and conversions. EU-based engineering, worldwide.

What is marine laser scanning used for?

It captures the exact as-built state of vessels, engine rooms and port structures as a millimetre-accurate point cloud — used to design and prefabricate retrofits (ballast water, scrubbers), plan dry-dock and conversion work, and build as-built models, without relying on decades-old ship drawings.

01 · the problem

Ship drawings stopped matching reality years ago

congested ship engine room with dense machinery and piping

Retrofits — ballast water treatment, scrubbers, conversions — have to fit into some of the most congested spaces afloat, where every millimetre counts. The drawings rarely match the engine room as it actually is after decades of changes. Get the geometry wrong and you pay for it in rework, extended dry-dock (where every day is expensive) and missed IMO compliance deadlines. Capturing a packed machinery space accurately and fast is the hard part — and it's what we specialise in.

WHAT WE DELIVER

Survey-grade as-built — the basis for a retrofit that fits first time

icon

Vessel & engine-room laser scanning

machinery spaces, decks, holds and superstructure, afloat or in dry-dock.

icon

Registered point cloud

millimetre-grade, cleaned and QA'd to survey tolerances.

icon

As-built 3D / BIM / CAD

machinery spaces and structures at your required LOD.

icon

Retrofit-ready models

a clash-free basis to design and prefabricate BWTS, scrubbers and conversions.

icon

Port & terminal as-built

quays, cranes and terminal infrastructure.

icon

Digital twin foundation

handover-ready for your platform.

We capture above-water and internal spaces with terrestrial laser scanning. We don't perform underwater hull surveys, bathymetric or hydrographic surveys, or certified marine / insurance condition surveys — we deliver accurate geometry and models for engineering and retrofit.

USE CASES

WHERE ACCURATE MARINE AS-BUILT PAYS OFF

Ballast water (BWTS) retrofit

engine-room geometry to design and prefab the system to fit.

Vessel conversion & modification

design against the real ship, not old drawings.

Scrubber / EGCS retrofit

accurate space for exhaust-gas-cleaning installation.

Port & terminal as-built

infrastructure geometry for engineering and modification.

Dry-dock & refit planning

scope and prefabricate off an accurate model before the dock window.

Digital twin foundation

the as-built layer your twin is built on digital twin oil and gas

04 · why 3D Engineering

A specialist reality-capture partner for marine retrofit

EU-based

EU data jurisdiction, GDPR, NDA.

The right tool for the job

Terrestrial, mobile, drone and close-range scanning, combined for survey-grade accuracy.

Retrofit-aware

Fast, accurate capture in congested machinery spaces.

Proven on hard assets

Industrial and marine projects, anonymised on request.

Selected projects & client experience

These are projects we can show publicly. A significant part of our work — critical infrastructure, offshore and live industrial assets — is covered by NDA and can't be displayed. The experience behind it is the same.

06 · FAQ

Marine laser scanning — common questions

  • Yes. We capture engine-room and machinery-space geometry as a millimetre-accurate point cloud, so the retrofit can be designed and prefabricated to fit first time — minimising costly dry-dock time.

  • No. We capture above-water and internal spaces with terrestrial laser scanning. Underwater hull and hydrographic scope sits with specialist providers.

  • Yes — we scan internal spaces afloat with minimal disruption to operations.

  • Yes. We plan fast capture within the dry-dock window, so modelling and retrofit design can start immediately.

  • Geometry to a few millimetres. The model reflects the vessel as it physically is — including undocumented modifications.

  • EU jurisdiction, GDPR and NDA. Most projects are confidential — we share capability and anonymised references on request.
