What Is LOD 100, 200, 300, 400 — And Why Does It Matter?

When it comes to building measurements, many clients ask:
“Can we just use a laser distance meter? Or do we really need a 3D scanner?”

Simply put: what’s LOD?

LOD stands for Level of Detail. It tells you how detailed and usable a 3D model is.

Imagine you’re designing a house:

● First, you get a box with a roof — that’s LOD 100
● Then doors and windows appear — LOD 200
● Then accurate floor plans, walls, and stairs — LOD 300
● Finally, full detailing — sockets, pipes, fixings — LOD 400

🔧 The higher the LOD number — the more information and accuracy you get.

Why is this important?

Want to see the basic layout? LOD 100 is enough

Need to create drawings or build from it? Go for LOD 300–400

FAQ

What happens if I choose a model with too low LOD?

You might get a nice visual, but it won’t be usable for construction or planning. For example, LOD 100 won’t include real wall thicknesses or door sizes.

Can I save money by starting with LOD 200?

Yes, if you just need basic visualization. But upgrading later can cost more than doing it right from the start.

Can I mix LOD levels in one model (e.g., some parts LOD 400, others LOD 200)?

Yes, that’s common. For example, façades at LOD 300 and technical areas at LOD 400.

If I work in AutoCAD, will an LOD 400 model be too heavy?

It depends on your computer and project size. We can deliver optimized files or split the model if needed.

Do I really need LOD 400 for a residential renovation?

Not always. LOD 300 is usually enough unless you need manufacturing-level detail.

How long does it take to model at different LOD levels?

LOD 100–200 is quick (1–3 days), LOD 300 takes 3–7 days, and LOD 400 can take up to 2 weeks, depending on complexity.

How do I know which LOD I need if I’m unsure?
Just tell us what you plan to do with the model — we’ll recommend the best LOD for your needs.
