What Is a Point Cloud and How Is It Different from a 3D Model?

A point cloud is the raw result of 3D laser scanning — millions of coordinates forming the shape of real objects or spaces. But a point cloud is not yet a usable model.

What is a point cloud?

A point cloud looks like a dense "dust cloud" that reflects the shape of a space or object. It has no solid surfaces, textures, or components — just coordinates in space.

So what is a 3D model?

A 3D model is the processed result — it has walls, floors, windows, openings. It’s something you can design with, measure, annotate, or integrate into Revit, AutoCAD, BIM.
