A total station measures discrete points you choose in advance — corners, control points, specific features — at very high positional accuracy. A laser scanner captures everything within its field of view as a dense point cloud, without needing to decide in advance which points matter. That's the trade-off: total station gives you precise, targeted points; scanning gives you complete, unbiased coverage.

Scanning wins wherever you need to document a complete, complex space — process units, piping, structures, irregular or organic geometry — or where you don't know in advance exactly which points will matter later. Total stations remain the right tool for establishing precise survey control networks, setting out construction layout, and tasks needing a small number of very high-accuracy points rather than complete coverage. In practice, the two methods are often combined: a total station or GNSS network establishes control, and scans are registered against it.
