As-built drawings from a point cloud (2D)

As-built 2D drawings — plans, sections and elevations — are produced by slicing and tracing a registered point cloud at defined heights and positions, giving you accurate, dimensioned drawings that reflect the structure as it actually stands, not as it was originally designed.

How 2D drawings are produced from a point cloud

Once the point cloud is registered and QA'd, drafters take horizontal and vertical "slices" through it at the heights and positions needed — a floor plan is a horizontal slice at a chosen height, a section is a vertical slice through a chosen line, an elevation is a projected view of a facade or structure face. Each slice shows the real measured geometry, which is then traced and dimensioned into a clean CAD drawing.

What's included: plans, sections, elevations

  • Floor plans — layout, walls, openings, equipment footprints
  • Sections — vertical cuts showing internal structure and clearances
  • Elevations — facade or structure-face views, dimensioned

Drawings are delivered in the CAD format your team works in, dimensioned to survey tolerance, and traceable back to the source point cloud.

Accuracy and what gets captured

Because the drawing is traced directly from measured points, it reflects the structure's actual geometry — including modifications, deviations and irregularities the original design drawings never recorded. See our accuracy guide for typical tolerances.

When 2D is enough, and when you need 3D or BIM

2D drawings are often sufficient for space planning, permitting, facilities management and straightforward renovation work. Where you need clash detection, MEP coordination or object-based data (quantities, specifications), a 3D or BIM model is the better fit — see our note on choosing the right LOD. Many projects use both: 2D drawings for quick reference, 3D/BIM for design work.
