Industrial plant laser scanning uses high-accuracy 3D laser scanners to capture a plant or facility as a millimetre-grade point cloud, then converts it into as-built drawings, 3D or BIM models. It gives engineers an accurate, current-state basis for revamps, retrofits, maintenance and digital twins — including every change the original drawings never captured.
Industrial plant scanning captures process areas, piping, equipment and steel structures exactly as built. Terrestrial, mobile (SLAM) or drone scanners record millions of measured points across the facility. Those points are registered and quality-checked into one coordinate system, producing an objective spatial record of the plant as it stands today — indoor and outdoor, at height and at congested ground level.
Unlike a drawing, a point cloud isn't an interpretation of the plant — it's a direct measurement of it. That distinction matters once a facility has been modified a dozen times since it was built.
Industrial and power facilities change constantly: new tie-ins, replaced equipment, revamps, expansions. Original drawings fall out of date within a few years of commissioning, and planning new work against the wrong geometry causes clashes, rework and lost time on a live site. An accurate as-built record removes that risk — and it's the foundation for scan-to-BIM and a digital twin.
Typical deliverables, at the level of detail your workflow needs:
We deliver the accurate as-built record; process and design decisions stay with your engineers.
See our Industrial & Power and Oil & Gas pages for sector specifics, and our note on why brownfield revamps need an accurate as-built first.
Accuracy comes from matching the method to the asset. We combine terrestrial scanning for survey-grade detail, mobile/SLAM for large or complex areas on the move, and drone capture for elevated or inaccessible structures — planned around operational constraints, permits and site safety to minimise disruption. See 3D laser scanning for the full toolkit.
We own the survey-grade as-built foundation — point cloud, 3D and BIM. A live digital twin, IoT or simulation runs in your platform: you keep the data and avoid vendor lock-in.
Can you scan an operational plant or live site?
Yes. We plan capture around access windows, safety requirements and operational constraints, indoor and outdoor, to minimise disruption.
How accurate is industrial plant scanning?
Survey-grade — geometry to a few millimetres, reflecting the plant as it physically stands. See our detailed note on scanning accuracy.
Do you scan power plants and substations?
Yes. We capture power generation, substations and energy infrastructure as a survey-grade as-built basis.
Can you work from our existing drawings or point cloud?
Yes — we can process and model from your data, or capture a new scan.
